Participating schools will have the chance to compete for an incredible prize - a Flower Power™ Turbine, a state-of-the-art wind turbine that not only generates clean energy but also serves as a symbol of progress and innovation, valued at $50,000. The school that achieves the greatest reduction in its carbon footprint will be declared the winner.

To calculate your carbon footprint, take the following into consideration:

  1. Energy Consumption: Determine the amount of energy consumed by your school. This includes electricity, heating, cooling, and any other energy sources. Consider using utility bills or energy meters for accurate data.

  2. Transportation: Assess the transportation activities associated with your school. Calculate the fuel consumption of vehicles used for school transport, staff commuting, and student transportation.

  3. Waste Generation: Estimate the quantity of waste produced by your school. This includes both recyclable and non-recyclable waste. Consider the waste generated from classrooms, cafeterias, and other facilities.

  4. Diet and Food Choices: The production of food, especially meat and dairy products, is associated with significant greenhouse gas emissions. Livestock farming, deforestation for agriculture and transportation of food contribute to carbon footprints. Dietary choices, such as consuming more plant-based foods and reducing waste, can help lower emissions.

  5. Other Factors: Take into account additional factors such as water consumption, paper usage, and any specific activities that contribute to your school's carbon footprint

By collecting data on the above factors, you can use a carbon footprint calculator, such as the one available here, to obtain a more precise estimate of your school's carbon footprint.

By embracing this challenge, schools can make a real difference in the fight against climate change. Together, let's empower the next generation to become environmental champions and create a greener, more sustainable world for all.
